We write about murders. The news is fodder for plots. To be frank, a certain attitude about the seedier side of life is necessary to be a mystery writer.
But every once in a while, one of these horrific realities intrudes on the mind, gets under the skin, needles away at the subconscious. Over the past few days, I’ve caught myself trolling the news sites to see if anything has happened in this case.
Kelsey has been haunting me.
She looks a lot like the imaginary victim in my latest manuscript, actually. It’s creepy, sometimes, to be creating a fictional murder and have a specific “look” in mind, but it’s necessary to make the story come alive. But to have the “look” suddenly be on the news, first missing, now dead, stolen from a safe and happy suburban life, abducted from a Target parking lot in full view of the video-cameras, for God’s sake…
Prayers to Kelsey’s family tonight.
